“Naaaaa”

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Natalie can say her own name! Well, sort of. Natalie calls herself “Naaaaa”—it’s like she knows how long it’s supposed to be, but she can only manage the first syllable. Now that she says it, it’s clear that she understands the concept of possession. A couple of weeks ago I came downstairs to find Chris and Natalie eating breakfast. Natalie was pointing at Chris’ coffee mug and saying “Daddy’s” and then pointing at her sippy-cup and saying “Naaaa’s.” Now one of her favorite activities is going around the house and labeling who different things belong to. Much to my chagrin, Natalie thinks the vacuum cleaner is “Mommy’s.”

And yes, I’ve become “Mommy” instead of “Mama.” Hearing Natalie say “Mommy” sounds much too grown-up as far as I’m concerned—I liked “Mama” much better. But talking to Natalie, I referred to myself as “Mommy” so I don’t know why I didn’t predict that that’s what Natalie would call me too. I wish I’d gotten a video of her saying “Mama”—it really was the sweetest sound on earth.

Here’s a video of what Natalie does everyday when we pick up Chris from the train station:
